Adult Mental Health

Chances are, you or someone you know has been affected by a serious mental or emotional condition at some point during your lives. The compassionate mental health providers at Beaufort Memorial and our team at Beaufort Memorial Sea Island Psychiatry are here to help.

We work with patients who have a variety of mental health conditions. Our providers take a whole-body approach to care, assessing a patient’s current mental and physical health status before developing a treatment plan. We work with patients to find the right combination of medications, lifestyle changes, counseling and other support services that allow them to manage their mental illness and regain quality of life.

Mental Health Services

Comprehensive Mental Health Services

At Beaufort Memorial, mental health care occurs on both an inpatient and outpatient basis.

Inpatient care begins when patients are brought to our facility in serious mental health distress. While they are in the hospital, psychiatrists provide crisis services and a thorough medical evaluation. They find the best medication or mix of medications to stabilize patients, allowing them to return home safely and begin outpatient care.

Outpatient care occurs at Beaufort Memorial Sea Island Psychiatry. Our psychiatrists understand that patients may have already tried a number of medications or lifestyle changes for a psychiatric condition. They work with patients in Beaufort and Okatie to find an approach that allows for successful management of a condition. In some cases, that includes working with medical specialists or primary care providers to treat chronic conditions that may be undiagnosed or poorly managed. We also address issues such as obesity and poor nutrition that can have a significant impact on mental health.

Conditions We Treat

Our mental health services help patients with a variety of mental health conditions, including:

Types of Therapy

At Beaufort Memorial, we understand that there is no one-size-fits-all treatment for mental health conditions. Our providers take a comprehensive approach to care with treatment services that may include:

  • Counseling — Our licensed social worker offers counseling to patients with mood disorders, PTSD and other conditions that benefit from therapy.
  • Medications — Before prescribing any medications, our psychiatrists evaluate patients and their treatment histories to determine which medications have been successful or unsuccessful in the past and help them identify any obstacles, such as finances or access to medications, that may prevent them from adhering to a treatment plan.
  • Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) — One of the safest, most effective treatments for severe depression, ECT stimulates the brain to release neurochemicals that counteract depressive states. It can also be effective in treating other conditions, such as bipolar disorder.
  • Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) — TMS is a noninvasive treatment that uses magnets to target specific areas of the brain that control mood. It can be effective in treating depression, OCD and other mood disorders.

Mental Health Support Services

We understand that community support is vital to adult mental health. In addition to comprehensive in-office care, our team works with you to find outside resources that may help you successfully overcome a mental health condition. We work with resources in the community, such as support groups, local therapists and counseling services, if necessary, that can complement your treatment plan. We also partner with substance use disorder programs for people who need more intensive treatment to overcome addiction.
