Breast Reconstruction

If you’re diagnosed with breast cancer, having a mastectomy can be one of your most effective treatment options. But, losing one or both breasts can also be an emotional and difficult experience.

For some women, breast reconstruction—a procedure which rebuilds the breast to near normal shape and size—is an important part of the healing process.

What to Expect

If you’re considering breast reconstruction, your surgeon will work with you and your cancer care team before your mastectomy to create the right plan and refer you to a plastic surgeon for the reconstruction.

Following each surgery, you’ll be closely monitored to help manage any discomfort. After you go home, you can expect some soreness, swelling and bruising.

A rebuilt breast may not have the same sensation as the original breast, though some feelings may eventually return. Most scars will also fade over time, and the shape will gradually improve in the months after reconstruction.

Most women return to normal activities within six to eight weeks after surgery.

Is Breast Reconstruction Right for Me?

Breast reconstruction can help you reclaim your silhouette and self-confidence. Also, insurance companies usually must cover most of the cost of reconstruction following mastectomy, since it’s considered part of treatment versus a cosmetic procedure.

Still, breast reconstruction isn’t for everyone. Your surgeon will walk through all options with you to help you make an informed and confident decision. We also offer a wide range of alternatives to simulate a natural looking breast under clothing, including breast prostheses or bras fitted especially for you. Or, you may choose not to use anything at all. We’re here to support you no matter what you decide.
