Cardiac Rehabilitation Program

The cardiac rehabilitation program at Beaufort Memorial is dedicated to rebuilding strength in people with chronic heart problems, who have just had a heart attack or other cardiac event, or who are recovering from bypass surgery or other form of heart surgery.

We offer medically supervised education, nutrition and exercise programs in a friendly atmosphere at the Beaufort Memorial main campus and the Okatie Medical Pavilion. Our medical professionals are here to provide support and guidance to improve your health in the long term.

If you are recovering from a cardiac event, call 843-522-5635 to talk to us about creating a personalized heart health plan that works for you.

Cardiac Rehabilitation

Cardiac Rehabilitation Specialists

Cardiac rehabilitation is a medically supervised program to get your heart health back on track. You will work with our team of exercise physiologists, registered nurses, respiratory therapists and registered dietitians, in partnership with your cardiologist. Depending on your specific needs and risk factors, you may be offered:

  • Fitness assessments
  • Nutrition counseling
  • Personal training
  • Risk factor counseling

We will work with you in a designated area of the LifeFit Wellness Center and also via virtual coaching to help you get back on track and improve both your health and quality of life.

The Phases of a Cardiac Rehabilitation Program

There are different phases of cardiac rehab, and not everyone will go through every phase. Your program will depend on your circumstances, but the goal is to educate you about healthy living and the importance of physical activity in protecting your heart from future damage.

  • Phase 1 takes place while you are in the hospital and provides close medical monitoring while gradually increasing your activity before you are discharged. This phase includes education about modifying your risk factors.
  • Phase 2 begins shortly after your discharge and generally lasts eight to 12 weeks. During this phase, you will exercise in continuously monitored sessions and increase exercise duration and intensity as your fitness level improves. Risk factor modification and lifestyle changes are emphasized.
  • Phase 3 further improves your fitness and reinforces healthy lifestyle practices. Monitoring is not continuous.
  • Phase 4 allows you to maintain your improved fitness in a medically supervised environment.

How Do You Benefit From Cardiac Rehabilitation?

Cardiac rehabilitation helps lower your risk of having another cardiac event. You will lose weight, eat better, exercise more and ultimately improve your quality of life. Our cardiac rehab therapists and exercise physiologists will coach and cheer you along as you make progress toward a stronger and healthier body.
