Pulmonary Rehabilitation: What to Expect

Our highly skilled respiratory therapists may offer pulmonary rehabilitation in the hospital or provide breathing exercises to strengthen your lungs at home. Although people with breathing difficulties commonly avoid exercise, it’s the fastest way to rebuild powerful lung function and improve breathing. Your program is based on your needs and may include one or more of the following phases:

  • Phase 1: If your chronic lung condition requires surgery, this stage of respiratory therapy takes place while you are still in the hospital. It includes close medical monitoring and gradually increasing your activity before you are discharged. You will also receive personalized education about modifying your risk factors to keep your lungs healthy.
  • Phase 2: In the second phase, you learn breathing exercises to strengthen your lungs based on your age, diagnosis and prior level of activity. As your fitness level improves, you will gradually increase exercise duration and intensity while our respiratory therapists work with you to manage risk factors and make healthy lifestyle changes. This phase can last approximately eight to 12 weeks.
  • Phase 3: The third phase of pulmonary rehabilitation further improves your lung fitness and healthy lifestyle changes. Monitoring is no longer continuous.
  • Phase 4: Healthy lifestyle practices are reinforced in the final phase, during which we focus on maintaining long-term lung health so you can breathe easier long after treatment.

Living with restricted breathing or chronic lung disease can dramatically reduce your enjoyment of life. If you’re ready to regain your health and energy for the things that matter to you, our highly trained pulmonary specialists are here to help.
