Posterior Hip Replacement Approach

Is hip pain stopping you in your tracks? It doesn’t have to be that way. Beaufort Memorial offers a minimally invasive posterior approach to hip replacement surgery that can relieve pain and improve function.

Using the posterior approach, the orthopedic surgeons at Beaufort Memorial can spare soft tissues and replace your hip joint without harming your key walking muscles, often allowing you to return more quickly to an active lifestyle. Your Beaufort Memorial surgeon will work with you to help determine if posterior hip replacement or another option is right for you.

Posterior Hip Replacement

What Is Posterior Hip Replacement?

The posterior approach is the most common technique used for hip replacement surgery. It is performed with a single incision on the backside of your hip, bypassing your primary leg muscles (abductors). The hip is then replaced with a state-of-the-art artificial joint.

The posterior approach may offer a number of benefits, including:

  • High success rate: This technique is considered the tried-and-true approach to hip replacement and has a low risk of complications.
  • Less pain and scarring: The surgery requires a single, relatively small incision.
  • Better precision: Approaching the hip from the back provides your surgeon excellent visibility to replace the joint.

At the Joint Replacement Center, we work to make your hip replacement experience as easy as possible. From pre-op education classes to post-op therapy and recovery, we’re here for you, because our biggest reward is seeing you walk out of our facility without pain in the way.

Posterior Hip Replacement Recovery

With many minimally invasive procedures, hospital stays last one to three days. Your recovery will begin the day of your surgery with light physical activity. The day after surgery, you’ll begin one-on-one physical therapy to strengthen your new hip. You will be discharged once your therapy goals have been met.

At home, you’ll continue your recovery with outpatient orthopedic rehabilitation for an average of six weeks to help you achieve your previous activity levels and beyond.
