What to Expect After Surgery

With surgery complete, you’re on the road to recovery. For some patients, that may mean going home the same day to recover. Other patients will need to spend one, two or more nights in the hospital for observation.

After Surgery — Same-Day and Inpatient

1. In the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU), you’ll be closely monitored as you recover from anesthesia.
2. If you need oxygen, you may have a mask or tubing on your face.
3. You may feel cold and shiver — which is normal after anesthesia. Warm blankets will be provided.
4. Your nurse will ask about any pain and ask you to rate it.
5. When you are awake and your vitals are normal, you’ll be released to either the same-day area or your hospital room.

Same-Day Surgery Recovery

1. Nurses will monitor you for about 30-60 minutes post-surgery.
2. Family members can visit you in the same-day area.
3. You’ll be offered a drink.
4. Depending on the type of surgery, you may be required to urinate prior to discharge.
5. You and your family member will receive written discharge instructions on follow-up care and any prescription medications.
6. You won’t be allowed to drive. Someone must drive you home and stay with you for the remainder of the day.

Inpatient Surgery Recovery

1. After you’re released from the PACU, you’ll be discharged to your room. Your length of stay will depend on your condition and the type of surgery you had.
2. Your surgeon, along with your care team, will determine when you’re well enough to return home.
3. At discharge, you’ll receive written discharge instructions on follow-up care and any prescription medications you’ll need during your recovery.
4. It’s a good idea to have whoever drives you home from the hospital stay.

Billing and Financials You will receive a bill from Beaufort Memorial for your surgery. You may also receive a separate bill from your physician or surgeon, radiologist, anesthesiologist or other providers who have private practices.
