Medical Oncology

Medical oncology allows doctors to treat cancer using medications to stop the growth of cancer cells. Our board-certified medical oncologists and specially certified nurses will work closely with you and your cancer care team to plan your treatment and monitor your progress throughout every phase of care.

All intravenous (IV) cancer treatments are administered in our infusion therapy centers in Beaufort and Okatie, where we make cancer treatments as comfortable as possible for our patients. You can relax during treatment with reclining chairs and other amenities. Our specialists on staff can help meet your needs.

For more information, and to schedule a consultation, call 843-522-7330 or speak with an oncology nurse navigator.

Types of Medical Oncology

Depending on your diagnosis, your medical oncology plan may include one or a combination of the following treatments:

  • Chemotherapy consists of medicines delivered in varied cycles through either an IV or pill to kill cancer cells. Chemotherapy may be used to shrink a tumor before surgery, kill cancer cells that remain in the body after surgery or radiation, or treat tumors that have developed in other areas. It can also help alleviate cancer-related symptoms.
  • Immunotherapy uses the body’s natural defense system to fight cancer cells. Immunotherapy medications are designed to boost your immune system so white blood cells can help fight and destroy certain cancer cells.
  • Targeted therapy helps stop cancer from growing and spreading by targeting specific molecules involved in the spread of cancer.
  • Hormone therapy slows or stops the growth of cancer cells that use hormones to grow, usually in breast and prostate cancers.
