Keeping Your Breasts Healthy

Annual Breast Screening

We encourage women age 40 and older to get an annual mammogram, following the long-standing recommendations from the American College of Radiology and the American Society of Breast Surgeons. These screening tests are safe and have proven to be the most effective tool for finding breast cancer early.

The Beaufort Memorial Breast Health Centers offer:

  • 3D mammography, which creates a three-dimensional picture that allows our radiologists greater flexibility in examining images and provides the highest level of accuracy for even the smallest tumors
  • 3D digital screening and diagnostic mammograms
  • Invenia™ ABUS 2.0 Automated Breast Ultrasound, a breast cancer screening performed in conjunction with a mammogram for women who have dense breasts (Beaufort location only)
  • On-site radiologists who provide same-day results

Diagnostic Mammograms and Ultrasounds

If a mammogram or breast ultrasound shows an abnormality, we know how unsettling that can be. An imaging navigator will talk with you about your results and assist you in scheduling any necessary follow-up appointments, and your referring physician will be notified.

We offer the most advanced diagnostic technology available, including stereotactic, ultrasound and MRI-guided breast biopsy, to assess any problems as quickly as possible. We can usually make a diagnosis within 24-48 hours. If you do receive a cancer diagnosis, a Breast Health Center breast nurse navigator is available to guide you through your treatment options and the process and answer all the questions you may have, both at the time of service and later.

Not all breast problems are cancer, and we are often able to assure a woman that the breast lump she feels is benign. In those situations, we offer expert care and provide referrals for a variety of benign breast conditions.

Call 843-522-5015 to schedule your stress-free mammogram today. Screening mammograms do not require a physician referral, prescription or order.

Annual Well-Woman Exams

Our caring women’s health providers offer annual well-woman exams, where we can assess your breast health and identify any breast cancer risk factors, such as your:

  • Age
  • Breast density
  • Family history
  • Genetics
  • History of breast cancer or other breast diseases
  • History of having children

Your provider can also counsel you on ways to decrease your breast cancer risk, for example, by:

  • Being more physically active
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Limiting alcohol consumption to one drink a day

Breast Surgery at Beaufort Memorial

Whether you have been diagnosed with breast cancer or have another breast condition that might benefit from surgery, we offer a full range of breast procedures, including:

  • Surgical breast biopsy
  • Lumpectomy (also called a partial mastectomy)
  • Mastectomy
  • Breast reconstruction to rebuild and reshape the breast after a mastectomy

When the diagnosis is breast cancer, rest assured you have some of the Lowcountry’s best experts by your side. Your dedicated breast nurse navigator works with medical and radiation oncologists, surgeons and physical therapists to create a personalized treatment plan that may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy or clinical trials through our affiliation with MUSC Health.
